33 LAFAYETTE AVENUE
33 Lafayette Avenue expands an existing 4-story building into a dynamic 7-story multi-dwelling structure with a commercial ground floor. The expansion utilizes upcycled orange shipping containers, which are retrofitted off-site and stacked on-site in a striking T-shaped configuration, seamlessly integrated into the existing building.
Each container features large semi-circular openings, creating bold circular forms that appear to float along the front and back façades. On the front façade, this circular motif is extended onto the original structure, with the "negative" shape painted in dark gray enamel, uniting old and new elements through a graphic interplay.
