WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND
concept & vision
CUT / Cutting the roots, cutting the umbilical cord, cutting the natural state of belonging to a place. 2 shipping containers are cut in multiple parallel sections at a 38-degree angle. MOVE / Moving elsewhere, moving to new worlds, new cultures, and new opportunities. 2 shipping containers are moved > from China > to the port of Naples > to a metal shop. > 12 sections are moved to the architecture gallery at the MAXXI. PLACE / Placing yourself in global environments – by creating local connections and establishing different relationships (in a group today, alone tomorrow; here today, there tomorrow)
design & architecture
12 container slices are placed in a rhythmic pattern, re-connecting the projects and stories of over 50 architects that have cut their roots, moved elsewhere and successfully developed a relevant body of work
program & use
visitors 'migrate' from one container slice to another, encountering the work and thoughts of the architects in an intimate one-to-one experience. Parallel graphic lines on the floor and walls slice the entire gallery organizing additional content - physical models, drawings, photos - according to a timeline from the 1930’s to the present
impact & significance
one element, a shipping container, anchors the exhibit tying the timeline on one wall and the architecture physical material on the opposite one. The container provides continuity yet allowing each studio to display their work at their own will
