concept & vision

we anchor a Multi-Media Gallery to the row of large white columns at the lower level of the New Museum. Columns are embraced with technologies, each a central pivot for different uses

design & architecture

orange buoys provide seating for individual and/or collective moments of visiting and exploration within this early multi-media gallery space

program & use

steel rings secures all components of each computer - CPU, keyboard and flat screen monitor - to each column, together with a pivoting padded seat. Visitors can seat and access the museum website and additional material related to current and past exhibitions. The two columns of the main multi-media gallery support monitors and projectors as a system that can be used together or independently, allowing the gallery to be transformed from one space with multiple projections to smaller galleries with individual videos. Pull-down screens divide the whole space into smaller, separate areas

impact & significance

a real vision at the onset of multi-media work—naturally from an early New Museum, at the onset of Lisa Phillips' direction, is an opportunity to begin materialize how to watch, how to search, how to experience video work
