WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND
concept & vision
we conceived the building as a place to gather and celebrate, and retrofit twenty-four shipping containers as a fully dismountable, itinerant building that travels on a cargo ship along the sail boats during the Volvo Ocean race. It is assembled and disassembled a number of times at different international harbors as a place of social gathering
design & architecture
a three-level stack of containers is shifted to create internal outdoor spaces, large overhangs and terraces. We brand the stack with PUMA' super-graphic logo, fragmented as a result of the shift. 40-foot containers and a number of existing container connectors join and secure the boxes both horizontally and vertically, with each module designed to ship as conventional cargo through a system of structural covering panels that fully seal its large openings and are removed on site to re-connect the large, interior spaces
program & use
two retail spaces occupy the lower levels, both with with 4-container-wide open spaces and large double heights to challenge the modular box-quality of the container. Offices, press area and storage occupy the second level, and a bar, lounge and event space with a large open terrace is at the top
impact & significance
PUMAcity takes full advantage of the global shipping network already in place. At 11,000 square feet of space, it is the first container building of its scale to be truly mobile, designed to respond to all architectural challenges of a building of its kind, including international building code, dramatic climate changes, plug-in electrical and HVAC systems, ease of assembly and operations
