concept & vision
a 5 stories building on the main shopping street in Shinsaibashi, Osaka is retrofitted following the company’s logo and slogan, Unique Clothing Warehouse. We consider the building as a sectioned warehouse, with its long, mute side lined with backlit metal mesh inscribed with the company’s logo, and its front set back to create a piazza effect along the overcrowded pedestrian street. The simply glazed elevation opens the warehouse to public gaze and access, with a single red container as an entrance canopy and a 3D eye-catcher
program & use
as a warehouse, the store is the stock room and has no separate stock room. On all 5 floors stacks of clothing surround the customers in incessant repetitions. The parallel pattern of the vertical and horizontal stacks of colorful clothes, that lines the walls and the aisles of the stores, are marked by a rhythm of parallel floor and ceiling stripes
impact & significance
we are called to design UNIQLO's first flagship store years before its US invasion! The store is a true warehouse, a place of basic clothing for everyone - we appreciate the intention and the effort to offer well-made clothing. The design is simple, as it is the effort at the time, well executed as always in Japan
