WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND
a ring of students' residences and shared spaces within nature
concept & vision
an elevated ring of adjacent containers embraces an open courtyard, floating on two support beams over the landscape
design & architecture
a shaded reversed amphitheater supports and connects the building to its surrounding. All public areas are on the first enclosed level, with two large semi-circular halls flanking both sides of the courtyard. The upper floors all around the ring are designated as bedrooms, all facing south, with large glass walls and a terraced balconies
program & use
we organize the ground, more public level for communal and individual activities such as eating, reading, working, studying, and relaxing, and for indoor physical activities such as weight training, yoga/tai chi studios, table tennis. Second and third level are the bedrooms, with a combination of single with full bath, and double with ½ bath, as specified in the brief. Residential floors also contain large shared showers and laundry facilities, and they are topped by a public deck on the roof
impact & significance
a plain array of adjacent containers proposes a surprising volume for a student dorm
