concept & vision
we start with the intention to make a place, a joyful place. Our ART HUB for the Whitney Museum is an open invitation: a public square that is defined yet porous, permeable, and accessible to all. Six UNITS congregate around a central, open, public space. The porous and permeable boundary buffers surrounding traffic; reframes neighboring views beyond and frames happenings within; and because each UNIT has its associated deck, each offers indoor-outdoor areas for art-making, blending with all kinds of eventfulness in the public square
design & architecture
the ART HUB’s central space, the public square, and the creative processes and inhabitable landscapes that occur within it and around it are open and accessible to the local community and to all new yorkers, who will see their boroughs, neighborhoods and voices expressed in the ART HUB’s micro-urbanism. A second level path, reachable with stairs and with a deliberately beautiful and accessible ramp, becomes a continuous balcony and overlook that loops 360-degrees around the public square, offering city views and a peek through the surrounding spaces
impact & significance
activating the area previously occupied by the meat packers, the long-term temporary container square of the ART HUB is a public theater in the round, a place for art and community
