concept & vision
we work with Big Reuse on the NYC Compost Project to transform food scrap through local composting at neighborhood scale. For the Queensboro Bridge site, where domestic food scraps are collected and processed into composting, an enclosed workspace offers warmth to the composting operators and acts as the interface with its surrounding community – a space to support learning about waste and community engagement
design & architecture
our 20-foot container is transformed through mirrored openings and colors, outside and inside. We insert reclaimed windows and paint a large scale Big Reuse leaf to activate the container long sides
program & use
we all project components – windows, lights, a wood door as a table/desk, and another one cut in two as shelves – are upcycled from leftovers found in the Big Reuse construction material recycling warehouse in Brooklyn
impact & significance
a drop-in, plug-in unit, a sort of large, inhabitable appliance, provides some color, joy, and warmth to an active waste scrap site
