WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND
a space for art making and learning before the museum moved downtown

Virginie Stolz, project lead / Alexis Kraft, KRAFT Studio, architect of record / Silman, structure
concept & vision
an appendix to the museum for art-making classes and exhibitions is set in the southern portion of the Sculpture Court of the Whitney Museum’s Marcel Breuer building on Madison Avenue
design & architecture
a cube of shipping containers stacked on two levels fits tightly the museum mote. We open this volume through a diagonal, continuous cut, which generates a band of fenestration along sides and roof and a double height within the space
program & use
the upper level mezzanine is retrofit with art supplies and desk areas, while the lower level, with direct access from the museum outdoor mote, is a flexible open space for art education, art making and exhibiting
impact & significance
six old and out-of-service containers are assembled to form a cube. We cut them irreverently of their original geometry, testing a more complex spatial experience and opening the activities within to a surprising and engaging interaction with the surrounding Breuer building, its cantilevers and widows, and its public
